Pop/Jazz vocalist Al Jarreau passed away on Sunday, only days after officially retiring from performing. His death came on the occasion of the 2017 Grammy Awards.

Born Alwin Lopez Jarreau on March 12, 1940, Al Jarreau received a total of seven Grammy Awards and was nominated for over a dozen more. Jarreau is perhaps best known for his 1981 album Breakin’ Away, for the theme song of the late–1980s television series Moonlighting, and as a performer in the 1985 charity song “We Are the World.”

A message on his website says Jarreau passed away while in hospital. Although his cause of death is unknown, he fought through respiratory and cardiac issues in recent years.

Al Jarreau was 76.
