Current Events
The Internet exploded last week after the post from a member of the Chi Omega Sorority at the University of Alabama went viral. Initially, local sorority members denied ownership of the social media post, claiming it was photoshopped. However, the national organization came clean and took immediate action, saying “The woman who took the photo is no longer a member of the chapter.”
“What was expressed is absolutely reprehensible and completely inconsistent with Chi Omega’s values and policies,” Whitney Plumpton, a national spokesperson for Chi Omega’s headquarters said. “Chi Omega took swift disciplinary action in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures.”
The University of Alabama has sought to repair its reputation of being racist by encouraging traditionally white fraternities and sororities to actively recruit minority members. According to the school newspaper, “The Crimson White,” Chi Omega recently accepted two black women into the sorority as well as several others who identify as a racial minority. They also reported that according to a prior statement from the University, “every sorority…extends bids to black women.”
