California’s Republican State Sen. Roy Ashburn has been one of the fiercest opponents of gay rights for many years, using his position in the statehouse to block every piece of legislation at every turn. So why then was he recently caught driving drunk after leaving a local gay nightclub?
“I’m gay,” Ashburn was forced to admit during a surprise radio interview in his first statement since the arrest. “Those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long.”
The 55 year-old divorced father of four claimed his 15-year political crusade against gay-rights in California stemmed from his desire to vote the way his constituents wanted.
