AOL MERGES WITH HUFFPOST
AOL (formerly America Online) is the one time King of dial-up Internet. Huffington Post is the liberal blog founded by Arianna Huffington, catering to politics and other current events of the day. Now the two are about to be married.
This week, AOL agreed to buy The Huffington Post for $315 million, in a move that will unite 2 Internet heavyweights into one very huge new media conglomerate, with potential to reach 270 million people
What started in 2005 as a liberal leaning alternative to right-wing publications such as the Drudge Report, HuffPost has grown to a whopping 25 million visitors a month in only 5 short years.
Under the agreed deal, Arianna Huffington will be the president and editor-in-chief of a newly formed Huffington Post Media Group, which will have all control over future AOL content. In a her column earlier this week, Huffington wrote: “Far from changing our editorial approach, our culture, or our mission, this moment will be for HuffPost like stepping off a fast-moving train and onto a supersonic jet.”
