APPLE GRAND CENTRAL
New York City is affectionately known as “The Big Apple.” Well, get ready “Big Apple” for an even bigger Apple.
With new MacBook Pros expected to be announced today, along with a new iPad 2 and iPhone 5 currently on the horizon, Apple, Inc. (formerly Apple Computers) says it will soon take a bigger bite out of “The Big Apple.”
As if it’s flagship store on prestigious Fifth Avenue wasn’t enough, Apple is set to open a gargantuan retail outlet inside Grand Central Terminal, the massive train station in the heart of Manhattan. Not only would this move reflect a change in the nature of the 140-year-old Grand Central landmark, but it would turn the station from essentially a transit point with scattered retail, into a full-fledged shopping destination.
Apple believes a Grand Central store would help alleviate the immense traffic at Apple’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue, which has become increasingly difficult to do business in, except for late at night. On most weekends and holidays, the store is virtually impassible, clogged by throngs of tourists from around the globe. And although that’s a great thing for Apple, it’s maddening for customers who get stuck in long shopping lines, or must wait hours for a Genius Bar appointment.
The outlet will become the largest Apple retail location in the world and will be called Apple Store, Grand Central. It is expected to open around September of 2011.
