If you’ve ever lost your cell phone, you know how much of a drag that could be. But one guy who recently lost his iPhone is now famous worldwide — because the phone he lost is said to be a prototype of the new and unannounced 4th Generation iPhone!
An Apple engineer reportedly was in a San Jose, CA bar over the weekend, when he accidentally lost his iPhone. It was in a casing that looked like Apple’s current 3GS iPhone and the person who found it waited to hear from the owner, but never did. Skip to Monday, when tech website GIZMODO bought the prototype from the finder, disassembled it and realized it was indeed the real thing. So they published video and details of what they found, much to the dislike of Apple, who is now mad as hell and suing to have the prototype phone returned.
If you’re an Apple fan like me, you’ll want to know the details of what new upcoming iPhone features GIZMODO found:
WHAT’S NEW
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic
WHAT’S CHANGED
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery
So as to not be trumped, Apple will likely make substantial changes now to the phone they were expected to announce this June. Or maybe not. But in the meantime, to see video details and pictures of the prototype for yourself, head on over to GIZMODO by clicking
