ARIZONA IMMIGRANT LAW FALLOUT

Spread The Love

The fallout from Arizona’s controversial new immigration law has become global, as it continues to stoke the emotions of Hispanics, minority groups and people of all races everywhere.  Hispanics living legally within the state are petrified they will soon become instant targets for a police department itching to make an example of the illegal immigrant problem.  But the rest of the country is digging in for a long, emotional and unified fight.

San Francisco’s Supervisor, David Campos, said he will submit emergency legislation to call for a boycott of Arizona. “I feel the city and county of San Francisco has to take a stand against what’s happened in Arizona,” Campos told the SF Weekly. “The law they’ve enacted is really an affront to the basic principles of the constitution.” The Spanish-language newspaper, Impre.com, published an editorial also calling for a boycott of the state, describing the new law as “a violation of basic civil rights” that would potentially give “free reign to racial profiling and the discriminatory actions that will ensue for being —or appearing to be— Latino.”

Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona vowed “We’re going to overturn this unjust and racist law, and then we’re going to overturn the power structure that created this unjust, racist law,” while New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said that if he were President, he would look into the legality of the bill.

Civil Rights activist Al Sharpton took on Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, saying “When you have a law that profiles people — let’s face it you can say whatever you want. When they’re saying there’s an enormous amount of people coming across the border from Mexico, therefore they’re really saying ‘We’re going to stop people that look like Mexicans to check their identifications.’ Which is to profile people based on race. We cannot profile people based on race. Two wrongs don’t make one civil right.”

A "DailyBeast.com" Commenter from Arizona state:"our state is completely broke! we rely mostly on tourism mostly from MEXICO, for those of you who know nothing about our state! we have nothing else that makes money down here except tourism, 55% of our businesses are run or owned by Hispanic Americans, and even still they have all banned together to boycott the state, and its not just Hispanics, the Asians and Black communities of the state have joined on board along with the states religious leaders of nearly every faith, the teachers union, the ACLU, and the police captains union! so when all is said and done this law is toast! it probably won't ever even get a chance to be enacted before its struck down by higher courts! not to mention the economic strain and the fact that we are already laying of policemen all over the state because we… Read more »
