They were one of the most unlikely couples in history — he, an Austrian bodybuilder turned movie star turned Republican; she, a television personality and member of one of America’s greatest political dynasties — the Kennedy clan. Yet for 25 years they made it work. Now, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver are calling it quits.
Mr. Schwarznegger and Ms. Shriver said in a statement last night that they were “amicably separating,” a mere 5 months after Mr. Schwarznegger finished his 2nd term as governor of California. But the separation comes at a particularly difficult time for Ms. Shriver, who recently lost her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, her father, Sargent Shriver, and her uncle, former Sen. Edward Kennedy.
“This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us,” they said in a prepared statement. “After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart, while we work on the future of our relationship.”
The former first couple of California said they would have no further comment on the separation and asked for privacy for themselves and their children.
