BARACK BOOSTS GREEN
Soul legend Al Green’s 1971 signature hit “Let’s Stay Together” is selling like hotcakes thanks to an unexpected source — President Obama!
Since “Crooner-In-Chief” Obama broke into a spontaneous rendition of the song at a January 19th fundraiser at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, sales of the popular tune increased a whopping 490%!! In fact, it sold 16,000 downloads in the week ending January 22nd, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which is the best sales week for the song since SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003.
Mr. Obama’s surprise sales boost of the song has certainly put some unexpected cash into the pockets of the song’s writers: Al Green, Willie Mitchell and Al Jackson Jr. Perhaps Al Green will return the favor by getting Mr. Obama some extra votes in the fall.
