Beau Biden Laid To Rest
“He was a scion of an incredible family who brushed away the possibility of privilege for the harder, better reward of earning his own way.” Those were the very personal words President Obama delivered at Saturday’s funeral for Vice-President Biden’s son, “Beau,” who passed away last week after a battle with brain cancer.
Current Events
The president described Joseph “Beau” Biden III as a son, a father, a soldier and a politician who didn’t cut corners in his efforts to serve his country and others.  He also remembered the younger Biden as a public servant who learned through early tragedy what mattered most and resolved to “live a life of meaning.”
Mr. Obama then reflected on the “cruel twist of fate” that killed Beau’s mother and infant sister in a car crash 4Â decades ago, which left 3-year-old Beau and younger brother Hunter hospitalized.
Out of that tragedy, Mr. Obama said, Beau as a “very young boy made a very grown-up decision: He would live a life of meaning. He would live a life for others.”
“His dad taught him that everybody mattered. He even looked and sounded like Joe — although I think Joe would be the first to acknowledge that Beau was an upgrade — Joe 2.0,” Mr. Obama said to chuckles from those in attendance. “But as much as Beau reminded folks of Joe, he was very much his own man. He was an original.”
Speaking directly to the vice-president and his wife, Jill, Mr. Obama embraced the strong bonds the 2 families have developed after more than 6 years together in the White House. The president even declared his family to be “honorary members” of the Biden clan. “Michelle and I thank God you are in our lives. Taking this ride with you is one of the great pleasures of our lives. Joe, you are my brother.”
Vice-President Biden embraced Mr. Obama amid the strains of “Bring Him Home,” from “Les Miserables.” Beau’s siblings, Hunter and Ashley, delivered a family statement during the service. Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, a favorite of Beau Biden, concluded the service with “‘Til Kingdom Come.”
The overflow crowd of 1,000 at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church included Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton, as well as a host of state and national political figures. People from across Delaware and beyond lined up hours in advance to pay respects to their favorite son and the Biden family.
