BERNICE KING NAMED SCLC PRESIDENT

Spread The Love
Bernice King, the youngest child of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was elected President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference on Friday.  The 46 year-old King, who is a minister at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia and also seems to have her father’s same “fire and brimstone” oratory style, is the SCLC’s first female president.  Ironically, King’s father was the SCLC’s first president in 1957.

In an interview with the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, King said “It is a destiny call.  It is part of my father and mother’s legacy and a continuation of the legacy he started in the ’50s and ’60s through this organization. I believe that the hand of God is leading me.”

I always believe Berneice was the heir apparent to her dad Dr. King. The oldest son Martin III is not inspiring at all and nothing like his famous father. Congratulations to Berneice for keeping the family dream alive.

I'm really happy for Bernice but mostly for the King family working out their differences. It was a sad state of affairs to see the children of Martin and Coretta infighting. That hurt me to my heart. Hopefully the SCLC presidency will be a positive step for Bernice and perhaps help pull the family closer together. The King family is our royalty.
