Bernie Endorses Hillary

Surprise! Bernie Sanders has (finally) endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.  And in other news, water is wet!

Politics
After remaining in a Democratic primary race that ended months ago, costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars per day to parade around the U.S. Senate with a Secret Service detail he no longer needed, and threatening to take his fight all the way to the floor of the DNC convention unless he got his way, Bernie Sanders finally realized what the rest of the world has known since April — he didn’t win!  So on Tuesday, Sanders surrendered.

Bernie Hillary 2“Secretary Clinton has won the Democratic nominating process, and I congratulate her for that,” Bernie said during a joint campaign appearance with Mrs. Clinton in New Hampshire. “She will be the Democratic nominee for president and I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next president of the United States.”

Sanders then thanked the people of New Hampshire, the people in his home state of Vermont, as well as those across the country who supported him. He then lit into presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, calling his economic policies “reckless” and slamming Trump’s anti-Mexican and anti-Muslim attempts to divide Americans.

“In these stressful times for our country, this election must be about bringing our people together, not dividing us up,” Sanders said. “While Donald Trump is busy insulting Mexicans, Muslims, women, African-Americans and veterans, Hillary Clinton understands that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Yes. We become stronger when black and white, Latino, Asian American, Native American – all of us – stand together. Yes. We become stronger when men and women, young and old, gay and straight, native-born and immigrant fight to rid this country of all forms of bigotry.”

After waiting for what seemed like an eternity for this “Kumbaya” moment, Mrs. Clinton was all smiles as she thanked Sen. Sanders for abandoning their former rivalry and becoming an ally.

“Being here with him in New Hampshire, I can’t help but reflect how much more enjoyable this election is going to be now that we’re on the same side,” Mrs. Clinton said. “Now, with your help, we are joining forces to defeat Donald Trump, win in November and together build a future we can all believe in.”

“Over the years I’ve gotten to know him as a colleague and a friend,” she continued in praise of Sanders’ efforts to bring young voters into the Democratic party. “His reputation for passionate advocacy hasn’t always made him the most popular person in Washington. But you know what? That’s generally a sign you’re doing something right. And throughout this campaign, Senator Sanders has brought people off the sidelines and into the political process. He has energized and inspired a generation of young people who care deeply about our country.”

Although seeing a unified Democratic Party less than 2 weeks before their convention was in stark contrast to the infighting and hot-mess predicted for next week’s GOP gathering, there was still the million dollar question: was Bernie’s endorsement too little, too late?

At the height of his candidacy, Bernie Sanders seemed to have the power to move mountains. He filled major stadiums as if he were a major rock star and brought young people into the political process unlike no other. However, when Bernie refused to acknowledge that his campaign fizzled a long time ago, his supporters did it for him.  A variety of politicos who originally worked on the Sanders campaign have long since joined the Clinton campaign. Additionally, Sanders supporters have witnessed the implosion of Donald Trump and already hopped on the Hillary bandwagon if for no other reason than to assure Trump never makes it to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.  This can’t be how Bernie Sanders once envisioned things to be.

The announcement on Tuesday that he was endorsing Hillary for president did not unlock a magic flood gate of supporters to suddenly back Clinton — they already did it a while ago. Bernie, himself was the only hold out. Bernie, himself was the only one still left at the starting gate. Bernie, himself was the last to know that despite his power struggles, the Democratic voters of America had already moved on.

Thank you, Bernie for repairing your perception of being a sore loser, for accepting the very clear writing on the wall and for finally joining the rest of the Democratic Party in support of their presumptive nominee. Too bad it only took you 2 months to do it!

Mr. BD

I watched them online yesterday and they looked real uncomfortable on that stage. But Bernie acted like he had a gun to his head when he endorsed her. I didn't hear him urge his voters to support her or nothing that made it seem like he was really on her side. The whole thing seemed real bland and he seemed miserable. When Hillary endorsed Obama eight years ago I was surprised but she gave it everything she's got. Bernie just looked like a angry old man who is pissed he didn't win.

Your entire post is spot on DJ. The man didn't know when to go somewhere and "siddown." By the time he got around to giving his endorsement to Hillary, the gesture was practically meaningless. As you point out a number of his former staff and most of his supporters jumped over to Hillary quite some time ago. I think the speed with which they jumped probably shocked Bernie. But it shouldn't have. Yes, his rallies were bigger… Read more »
