The President Joe Biden congressional address before a (muted) joint session of Congress on Wednesday night was a history maker.
Politics
Traditionally known as the State of the Union Address, the Biden congressional address was filled with many firsts. Number 1: The address was invitation only and, because of Covid, impossible for every member of Congress to attend. Number 2: Only 2 members of the Biden cabinet and a lone Supreme Court justice were allowed in the room. Number 3: No guests were invited to sit with First Lady Jill Biden in her guest box (again, due to Covid restrictions).
However, the most historic moment of the Biden Congressional Address came at the very beginning of his speech when he uttered the words: ‘Madam Speaker and Madam Vice-President.’
“No president has ever said those words from this podium. And, it’s about time,” he added.
Yes, this was the very first presidential address before Congress with a female vice-president sitting behind the commander-in-chief. Additionally, this was the first presidential address where 2 women sat in the vice-president’s and speaker’s seats behind the commander-in-chief.
Of course, this was also the first time the world saw a second “gentleman” sitting with the first lady. Oh, and it all happened on the 99th day of the Biden presidency (today is his 100th day).
Aside from its historic elements, the Biden congressional address was widely considered a success.
In his own words, the president said he didn’t come to be partisan or to make enemies. Instead, he laid out a common-sense agenda that was difficult for even the most die-hard conservative to critique.
He spoke against rich corporations that pay zero in taxes and said it’s time for the wealthiest Americans to finally pay their fair share. He spoke in favor of equality in pay for women and equality in acceptance of the LGBTQ community. He also trumpeted the patriotic theme of never counting out or taking America for granted.
“Folks, as I told every world leader I ever met with over the years, it’s never ever, ever been a good bet to bet against America and it still isn’t,” Mr. Biden said to thunderous bipartisan applause. “There is not a single thing, nothing, nothing beyond our capacity. We can do whatever we set our minds to if we do it together. So let’s begin to get together.”
Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and the only African-American member of the high chamber gave the conservative response.
“Our president seems like a good man. His speech was full of good words. But three months in, the actions of the president and his party are pulling us further and further apart,” Scott surmised without offering much legitimate proof to back up his partisan talk.

Lol…naturally. Tim Scott is a typical Republican schmuck. Offering up proof or facts while railing against someone or something is par for the course for pretty much any member of that sorry, good for nothing, bunch.
