Former Vice-President Joe Biden filmed a video tribute to the Black man who was killed after screaming “I Can’t Breathe” while pinned under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer. The tribute was played during George Floyd’s funeral service on Tuesday and was a veritable Master Class in compassion and humility.
Biden met privately with the Floyd family a day before the final homegoing celebration in Houston. He then referenced Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter Gianna during his video presentation.
“Now is the time for racial justice,” Biden said. “That’s the answer we must give to our children when they ask, ‘Why?’ Because when there’s justice for George Floyd, we will truly be on our way to racial justice in America. And then, as you said Gianna, your daddy will have changed the world.”
Biden’s words were a reminder of how a president can and should console and unite during a time of crisis.
