Biden SCOTUS Nominees Will Be Blocked: McConnell

Spread The Love

Don’t look now, but Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is at it again.  This time, he’s already threatening to go after any potential Joe Biden SCOTUS nominees.

Politics
During the last year of President Barack Obama’s term, Republicans pulled a dirty move by completely blocking his replacement choice for the US Supreme Court.  At the time, Mr. Obama selected current US Attorney General Merrick Garland to join the SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States).  However, the Mitch McConnel-led Republicans blocked the nomination and wouldn’t even meet with Garland, claiming it was too close to the next presidential election for Mr. Obama to make such an important selection and that the decision should be left to the next president.

Presidents have full authority to make nominations up to the very moment their term ends.  Although Mr. Obama had nearly 10 months left in his presidency, McConnell’s dirty trick worked.  He blocked the Obama nomination and kicked the can down the road to Donald Trump, who selected Neil Gorsuch, a conservative, to tilt the nation’s high court.

Now, Mitch McConnell is once again threatening that if Republicans regain control of the Senate next year, he will pull the same stunt against any prospective Biden SCOTUS nominees.

“I think in the middle of a presidential election, if you have a Senate of the opposite party of the president, you have to go back to the 1880s to find the last time a vacancy was filled,” McConnell said. “So I think it’s highly unlikely” that any Biden appointees will be confirmed.

McConnell’s brazen double-standard here is that he is pretending to believe that a president shouldn’t make a SCOTUS nominee so close to a presidential election.  However, when Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away just 6 weeks before the 2020 presidential election, McConnell and his GOP cronies allowed Donald Trump to nominate conservative judge Amy Coney Barrett and even raced through her confirmation as a matter of “national security.”

So, Democrats should be paying close attention to McConnell’s rare slip of the tongue on his future strategic plans.

Now is the time for the president to ignore the concept of bipartisanship (it’s clearly dead) and push through his agenda without blinking an eye.  Now is the time for President Biden to force approval of his infrastructure plan and the Democratic plan to kill the filibuster.  NOW is the time for Mr. Biden to immediately increase the size of the Supreme Court and nullify any future dirty tricks from Mitch McConnell and the GOP to load the court with justices who will simply be an extension of the Republican Party.

Repubs already showed what they are about. They could give a fig about bipartisan. The thing they did with Merrick Garland and Amy Coney Bryant is how they are playing the game. Biden has to do the same thing now while he has power to get something done. Because the Repubs are just going to keep playing games.
