Attorney General Eric Holder attended the commemoration, as did former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a Birmingham native who attended school with Denise McNair. Sarah Collins-Rudolph, who was 12 at the time and survived the blast but lost her right eye and sister Addie Mae Collins, was also on hand as church members laid a wreath at the spot where dynamite was placed along an outside church wall.
“God spared me to live and tell just what happened on that day,” said Rudolph, whose testimony against the Klansmen brought about a successful conviction years later.
No matter the years that have past since this horrific event happened, hearing about/reading about this story (like so many stories of the Civil Rights era) is still so painful for me.
But it's imortant to tell it so that We (all Americans) never forget the sacrifices made by so many in this country in pursuit of Equal Rights and being allowed to simply live in Peace.
