History was made on Tuesday when 17 black female judges in Harris County, Texas were sworn-in.
Current Events
Affectionately known by their local Democratic campaign as “Black Girl Magic Texas,” the 17 black female judges won a massive sweep during the November midterm elections. According to KHOU 11 News, their feat is believed to be the largest group of black female judges elected at the same time in US history.
“It’s a brand new day in Harris County! Swearing in of the Newly Elected County Officials and Judges,” the group posted on Twitter. “Today we usher in a new era of representative government and progressive leadership in Harris County.”
Erica Hughes, who was sworn in as a criminal court judge, was ecstatic and said she couldn’t wait to start.
“I even have my stuff laid out on the bed. Kind of like the first day of school,” Hughes said.
Harris County (which includes Houston) is the most populous in the state of Texas, with a population of more than 4 million people.
In total, 19 African-American women will serve on the county’s bench in 2019 and will provide more than 200 years worth of experience between them.
Congratulations to the new judicial additions.
THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY!
