If she had still been a “senior” working member of the British royal family, the wife of Prince Harry would have never been allowed to comment on the Black Lives Matter movement or the recent protests that took place across the US. However, as a woman with a black mother and a white father, Meghan felt compelled to speak on the deaths of George Floyd and others at the hands of police and show her passion for the value of black lives.

In a videotaped response, the Duchess of Sussex told graduates from her old high school in California of her fears she would be “picked apart” for talking about the fury on America’s streets.
“I realized the only wrong thing to say is to say nothing,” she said.
According to a former palace official, Meghan’s remarks would have been impossible prior to her and Prince Harry stepping down from royal duties.
“Had Meghan and Harry still been in the U.K. and working members of the royal family that speech couldn’t have happened,” said Dickie Arbiter, Queen Elizabeth II’s former press secretary.
“I’m talking about the whole speech… It’s highly politicized because of the very nature of what it is. And it’s starting to voice opinions about the internal affairs of another country. I don’t think the queen has to say anything,” he continued.
“It is a social issue for the United States and it is not for a head of state to voice an opinion, whether the queen or the president of France or whoever,” Mr. Arbiter added.
