A pair of Black teens are being celebrated as heroes after risking their own lives to save the life of a stranger.
Current Events :
Tony Cooper and his friend Elijah Hinds, both aged 13 from North Lauderdale, Florida, were walking home from a restaurant last week when they saw a driver lose control of his pickup truck and crash into a canal. That’s when the teens decided to jump into action and prevent a potential drowning.
“We rushed and took off our shoes and stuff,” said Cooper. “We literally jumped on the hood and then we took off the seat belt and then we pulled them out. I started screaming at him because he was heavy while he was in the car. We were screaming, he woke up, we helped him get out of the car and after that, he was on the hood and then we pulled him onto the grass.”
Soon thereafter, police deputies and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue units arrived on the scene and found the semi-conscious driver on a grassy embankment. Thanks to quick thinking by the Black teens, the man is in stable condition at a local hospital and his life has been spared.
Tony and Elijah have since been honored with certificates recognizing their bravery and $100 each for their actions during a ceremony at their school, Pine Ridge Education Center.
“I had to save somebody’s life because if it was your family you would want somebody to save your family too,” said Tony.
“I was thinking that I wasn’t going to let that person die that’s not the way to die,” said Elijah.
The story of these 2 brave Black teens is truly a great way to start the weekend.
