Black Women Headed To The US Senate

Spread The Love

Congratulations are in order for 2 Black women who have made history in their bids for the US Senate.

Politics :
Despite the disappointing results of the 2024 election, there’s reason to celebrate the huge wins of Democrats Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Blunt Rochester, who are now headed to Capitol Hill as only the 4th and 5th Black women in history ever to become US Senators.

In Maryland, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, 53, beat former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan to represent her state. In Delaware, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, 62 secured the seat vacated by Democratic Sen. Tom Carper. They will now join Carol Moseley Braun (1992), Kamala Harris (2017), and Laphonza Butler, who replaced the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein in 2023, as the only Black women ever elected to the US Senate.

“So many people created the opportunities for us to be in the space that we are in … Coretta Scott King said that freedom is never really won; we have to fight it and win it in every generation,” Alsobrooks said about the importance of her race.

“It’s going to be our responsibility to ensure that we make the kind of impact that allows people from similar backgrounds to have the same opportunity. The housekeepers like [my grandmother] Sarah, the car salesmen like my father, the receptionists like my mother, those people should be able to see themselves in each of us,” she added.

Alsobrooks and Rochester, who lovingly refer to each another as “sister senator,” are now considering themselves “built-in allies.”

“We’re going to be able to do some really big and bold work,” Rochester said. “The history-making part is good, but the impact is what we’re all going for, to make a difference in people’s lives. The ability to go to the Senate and be one of 100 — but also as 2 of only 5 [Black women senators] in the history of this country.”

I commend both ladies on their election win.

Though I highly doubt that the right-wing, white power structure of the American government will actually allow them to get much done in any meaningful way, I Applaud their desire to try to make a difference, nonetheless, and I wish them well!

Off topic for just a moment…..

DJ I hope you will consider doing a post next week on White Supremacy in America and the role it may or may not have played in the presidential election, in particular, depending on one’s point of view.

Mr.BD

I am having a hard time being happy about anything now especially with Repubs running the senate. But congratulations to these ladies.
