BREASTFEEDING AT 3?

Spread The Love

Um… what’s wrong, America?

The cover of this week’s Time magazine shows a woman breastfeeding her 3-year-old son in a story on “attachment parenting.” Needless to say, reaction to the story has been swift and furious.

Jamie Lynne Grumet, a 26-year-old a stay-at-home mom in Los Angeles is defending her choice to breastfeed her 3-year-old, by admitting her mother breastfed her until she was 6-years-old.  WOW!

Grumet says her son is not ready to be weened from the breast, so she’s allowed him to continue until a time of his own choosing.  She added that she has given up reasoning with strangers who see her son nursing and threaten “to call social services on me or that it’s child molestation.”

“People have to realize this is biologically normal,” she said, adding, “The more people see it, the more it’ll become normal in our culture. That’s what I’m hoping.  I want people to see it.” Perhaps Grumet sees it as normal, but how will her son view it once he’s old enough to realize and is perhaps ridiculed by his peers for it?

So readers, tell us in the comments below:  When is a child too old for breastfeeding?
