Car Seat With Gesture Control
If you’re tired of using a manual control car seat in your vehicle, you’ll be happy to know there’s about to be a better way.
Technology
Thanks to researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC and in conjunction with Isringhausen GmbH & Co. KG, these designers have developed a fully functional prototype that will allow drivers to adjust their car seat using only hand gestures.
Set for an unveiling next month at IAA in Frankfurt, the prototype is a series of sensors beneath  a synthetic covering. To start using gesture control a driver will first press a point on the car seat cover to activate the sensors (which also prevents the sensor system from being accidentally triggered).  The driver can then use broad hand gestures along the sensors to move the seat forward or back, adjust the incline up or down, or custom-set the incline of thigh support. The movements are easy to learn and said to be similar to swipes on a smartphones display. Also, individual settings are automatically stored and can be accessed later.
The gesture control system was developed for professional and long-haul drivers, who frequently have to sit for long periods of time in uncomfortable conditions. However, the gesture car seat will also make your life easier under normal driving circumstances. Incidentally, several car makers are also designing gesture control of your entire car interior, including control of the stereo, temperature control and more just by the movement of your hand.  Check it out!
