It was a moral victory for transgendered people everywhere, as Chaz Bono made history last night on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.”
Originally, Chastity Bono was born a female to iconic 70’s couple Sonny & Cher. But Chastity is now “Chaz” after a sex change made Chastity a male.
Expectations for Chaz on DWTS were exceptionally low, as no one really knew what he would bring to the contest. But once he took to the floor and performed the Cha Cha with professional partner Lacey Schwimmer, the judges and the viewing public were pleasantly surprised.
Chaz acknowledged that his mother, Cher, is the dancer of the family. But his DWTS performance proved he has plenty of his own rhythm, as he shimmied to the classic Motown tune “Dancing in the Street.” The number ended with a standing ovation from the full house.
“You can dance!” judge Carrie Ann Inaba raved, throwing her hands up in the air. “You have great footwork, it was sharp, it was precise… You light up this room!”
