Chicago Police Livid Over Smollett Dismissal

Spread The Love

Chicago police are seething mad after prosecutors surprised the world this week by dismissing all charges against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett.  Now, they’re refusing to let the case go and are even calling for a federal investigation into the state attorney.

Entertainment
Kevin Graham, president of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police, says he wants to know why Kim Foxx, the state’s attorney for Cook County, recused herself from the Smollett investigation in mid-February.  He also wants to know about reports that Foxx was involved in “diverting the case from [the] Chicago police department to a federal investigation.”

In remarks to reporters on Tuesday, Graham said he made his request to the US Department of Justice last week — and that he also asked federal investigators to look into whether Smollett sent a racially charged letter to himself only days before he was allegedly attacked on a Chicago street.

.
“We’re doubling down on that. We want to make sure that the Justice Department takes a very hard look with that case and what went on today,” he said.

In dismissing the case, prosecutors said they cut a deal with Smollett to perform 2 days of community service and to forfeit the $10,000 bond he paid to the city of Chicago.  The move allowed Smollett’s attorneys to get his criminal case immediately sealed, which caught Chicago police brass by surprise and brought condemnation from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who called it a “whitewash of justice.”

“He used the laws of the hate crime association that all of us through the years have put on the books to stand up to be the values that embody what we believe in. This is a whitewash of justice. A grand jury could not have been clearer.” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel

However, despite anger from Chicago police over the eventual outcome, legal experts say dropping the case was likely the right move since prosecutors probably saw huge holes in the case and did the “best they could do in the interest of justice.”

“I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt and believe they looked at the evidence and didn’t feel they could prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt,” said criminal defense attorney Sara Azari.

“This is not celebrity justice. This case is way too high-profile for a District Attorney’s office to just hand over a gift of exoneration to Jussie Smollett,” Azari added.

“I’ve heard that they wanted their day in court with TV cameras so America could know the truth and know they tried to hide behind secrecy to broker a deal to circumvent the judicial system.” Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson

Prosecutors took into consideration that they had no credible witnesses they could call, no video footage of the alleged attack, and that Smollett had no prior felonies and wasn’t a danger to the community.  A trial would have cost the state money and would have likely ended with no jail time for the actor had he been convicted.  So, it was in the best interest of all involved to not pursue prosecution.

“Prosecutors thinking about reviewing the evidence decide that maybe a criminal solution or criminal prosecution is no longer the most effective way to reach justice,” added former federal prosecutor, Laura Coates.

Meanwhile, word out of Hollywood is that a division exists between cast and crew members of “Empire,” who remain torn over Smollett’s guilt or innocence.

According to TMZ, there are people on the set — especially writers — who believe the dismissal of charges is a vindication and proves Jussie was a victim.  However, there are also a number of people on set who believe Jussie staged the attack to squeeze more money out of producers and are shocked by the lack of consequences … and don’t want him back on the show.

For his part, Smollett says he has already paid the City of Chicago, has done his community service work, and simply wants to move forward.

“I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one,” Smollett told reporters in a statement. “I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I’ve been accused of.”

So we’ve got yet another investigation that’s resulted in a muddled mess. Our government is a dangerous joke. Our criminal justice system is a sick joke. And from the outside looking in our allies and enemies alike probably can’t believe just how truly jacked up WE are as a nation and a people.

I’ve said it more than once, Trump is a Our reckoning . He’s a reflection of Us. America.

The way Trump talks, thinks and behaves is very familiar to many or, dare I say, Millions of any Americans. No doubt Jussie can relate.

Of course the irony of Jussie’s hoax is that he tried to pin his fake attack on “MAGA” hat wearing Trump supporters. And like Trump, looks like Jussie is going to get away with his crimes too.

You really can’t make this sh*t up can you?….smh. Nope.

NBC News:

President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday morning that the FBI and Department of Justice would review the decision by Illinois prosecutors to drop all charges facing actor Jussie Smollett for allegedly fabricating a hate crime.

Trump called the prosecutors’ decision “an embarrassment to our Nation!”

FBI & DOJ to review the outrageous Jussie Smollett case in Chicago. It is an embarrassment to our Nation!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 28, 2019

Federal officials confirmed to NBC News that the Justice Department is reviewing the Smollett case and how it was handled, though expectations were low Thursday that any federal action would be taken.

Smollett attorney Tina Glandian said on “Today” that “we have nothing to be concerned about” regarding the potential federal probe.

Wil, I just left a meeting, came back to my office, and saw this news.

Guess it ain’t quite over for Jussie. But we shall see.

Wil

The irony is he wants an investigation into Jussie but didn’t want one into himself.

Well Wil you know Trump. He’s nothing if not a 2-legged walking billboard of irony!

AP: Jussie Smollett’s career faced mortality after he was arrested and accused of lying about being targeted in a January hate crime attack, and the case’s abrupt dismissal hasn’t exactly cleared the actor’s path to professional redemption. Enormous backlash has emerged since Chicago prosecutors announced Tuesday that they were dropping 16 felony counts that accused the Empire actor of falsely reporting to police that he was assaulted by two men in downtown Chicago early Jan. 29. Numerous questions about the handling of the case remain, although a prosecutor says the dismissal is not an exoneration. The murkiness of the incident — Smollett and his lawyers maintain he is the victim of a vicious attack while Chicago’s mayor and police chief contend it was staged — could make it an uphill climb for Smollett to get his acting and music career back on track, crisis management experts say. “My gut tells… Read more »

“My gut tells me that the public does not believe that he is innocent,” said Eric Rose, a partner at the public relations firm Englander Knabe & Allen. “They believe there was some sort of favoritism. That he cut a deal because of his wealth and power. It’s not good for him.” – AP

Perhaps Jussie is about to find out that “Black wealth” and power STILL only gets you so far.

“Rahm Emanuel says Chicago will send Smollett a bill” [Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) said Thursday that city officials will be sending actor Jussie Smollett a bill after 16 charges against the “Empire” star were dropped earlier this week. In an interview with WGN Radio, Emanuel said city officials deserved to know exactly what happened the night of Smollett’s alleged assault. “He is charged with 16 counts for creating a hoax about a hate crime. He walks out, says, ‘I’m innocent.’ They say, ‘No, he’s guilty, the police work was good,'” Emanuel said. “Now, you can’t be both on the same case. So to me, was he or was he not guilty of a hoax, or was there a hate crime committed? Yes or no, it’s a very simple question,” he added. “There’s no sense of contrite. No remorse.” Emanuel went on to say that his office would direct the… Read more »

Thanks to tax season I am late responding today. But I just heard a Illinois congress man wants to withhold state film tax credits from any production that employs Jussie Smollett in the future. I think they are going to far with this now and this is going to backfire on them. Because production companies will not want a state controlling them like that so they will just stop filming in Chicago.

“Jussie Smollett ordered to pay $130,000 to the City of Chicago” Excerpt: According to TMZ, the Chicago Corporation Counsel – who handles civil claims for the City – have sent a letter to Jussie demanding he pay the $130,000, to compensate for the overtime pay for police who investigated his case. In the letter, the counsel wrote: “Over two dozen detectives and police officers participated in the investigation, ultimately spending weeks investigating your false claims. “The Chicago police investigation revealed that you knowingly filed a false police report and had in fact orchestrated your own attack.” The City is demanding “immediate payment” within seven days, and if the 36-year-old actor doesn’t hand over the cash, the Corporation Counsel vows to “prosecute you for making a false statement under the Municipal Code of Chicago.” The prosecution would be different from the criminal case that was recently dismissed, and whilst Jussie wouldn’t… Read more »
