Clay Aiken Political Opponent Dies Suddenly
Former American Idol singer Clay Aiken has been running for the Democratic nomination for congress from the state of North Carolina.  Sadly, his one and only opponent is no longer.

Unbiased Political News
Keith Crisco, 71, a former North Carolina secretary of Commerce, died “after an accidental fall” at his home in Asheboro, NC, according to a statement from his family.  His death was totally unexpected and came only 1 week after primary voting had ended.

Aiken led Crisco by 369 votes for the Democratic nod in North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District, but the race was too close to call and had not yet been finalized.  State elections officials had been counting all the absentee and provisional ballots from last week’s primary, and the 9 counties in the district had until Tuesday to report their official canvass of votes.  According to Brad Crone, a political strategist and longtime friend to Crisco, the now deceased politician was preparing plans to concede to Aiken prior to his accidental death.

Upon news of the surprise death, Aiken suspended all campaign activities to pray for Crisco’s family and friends.

“He was a gentleman, a good and honorable man and an extraordinary public servant,” Aiken said in a statement. “I was honored to know him.”

Unbiased Political News
Clay Aiken is now the official Democratic nominee by default and will go on to face GOP Rep. Renee Ellmers in the fall general election.

How tragic! That is horrible. My prayers are with his family and community.

Jodie

I only heard briefly about this on the AM news, I'm glad you did a post about it. I wanted to learn more. The news joked that Clay had in some way caused the death. Very sad. Glad that Clay was so gracious about it, and didn't cause it 😉

Mr. BD

I know the Democrats are chewing nails over this one. No way Clay Akin can win in that conservative district. Prayers to his family but the deceased guy was their only hope because Clay is winning nothing!

SpiffyTiffy

Oh, Clay Aiken, you crack me up! Is this what you are up to now? With your extra matte makeup and your love songs? So glad American Idol fame has served you well! Croon on!!

Steve

What happens if the public (or party) doesn't want Clay? There should be a way to override this decision because let's be real, he is not the best foot forward that the Dems need.

D*K

Odd. How often does, something like this happen?
Who would have thought that an american idol winner would ever have a chance seat in congress?

Matt

I am sorry but your news network is deplorable for even insinuating that he was responsible.

Jodie

You are right. Our news network sucks. That is why I have to go elsewhere for my information.

Matt

That may have come off harsh but your news outlet is not alone. I had a national news network on while I was doing something else and overheard them making jokes that Clay's voice being so annoying that it would drive anyone to death (then they played a clip from his first album).

I simply turned it of and went on with living in the real world.

Jeff

They take it to a vote, IDOL style. In all honesty, I am interested to know this as well. According to the article Clay was not the front runner by a landslide so we can assume that at least 45% of the people voting did not want him.
