Could An Asteroid Soon Hit The Earth?
Current Events
According to researchers, the new truth is that we are actually 10 times more likely to get struck by an asteroid than before. Why, you ask?
Previously, NASA only looked for space rocks that were 100 feet wide or larger. However, after a much smaller meteorite exploded over Russia and caused massive damage, they have since been forced to — well — rethink their thinking. NASA has now come to realize that smaller asteroids are still very powerful and therefore must be kept track of too.
The unfortunate truth is that smaller asteroids (the ones scientists have been ignoring) are swirling past earth all the time. Scientists have discovered 60 smaller and previously ignored asteroids that are capable of blowing up the earth. In fact, a team of Ukranian astronomers have discovered a new asteroid that has a real chance of hitting Earth in 2032 with apocalyptic consequences. That’s not necessarily good news.
Current Events
The more plausible risk is a small asteroid decimating an entire city, versus the entire planet. Yet the truth is, we have completely underestimated the risk of smaller asteroids and we’re just now beginning to catalog them. We are also way behind in our preparation for such a catastrophe and have probably dodged many a bullet without even knowing it. New data shows that these smaller asteroids have been hitting the earth in the ocean or in remote parts of the world without our knowledge, increasing the odds of a cataclysmic event from 2 to 10 times as likely as before.
We have the technology to build systems to find these smaller asteroids days and weeks before they hit. We can even figure out where and when they will hit us. We just haven’t been using such technology to our advantage. But in order to avoid the risk of sending humanity to the same demise as the dinosaurs, it’s high time we implemented new warning systems to protect us against all space rock activity, big or small.
A warning system about asteroids is good and would be more beneficial than the star wars carp missions they were playing with each year. However, while we are build one that detect asteroids, lets make sure it can also detect the space junk that is dropping back to earth.
