Hip hip, hooray! The COVID pandemic has been ruled all but over!
Top News Today :
Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that COVID is no longer a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), which is the highest possible level of alarm that mandates countries to act under international health regulations.
However, the WHO was quick to point out that COVID-19 is not completely over and is still capable of being contagious and making us ill. Instead, they wanted to make clear that they’ve now deemed COVID as no longer an “unusual or unexpected event” and that the world has made a major step toward ending the pandemic.
Earlier this month, the WHO held a press conference to announce the release of a strategic plan for transitioning to “longer-term sustained COVID-19 disease prevention, control, and management”.
“I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. “However, that does not mean that COVID-19 is over as a global health threat. This virus is here to stay. It is still killing and it is still changing.”
Although Mr. Ghebreyesus did not explicitly say that COVID remains a pandemic, the World Health Organization did refer to the “Ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in a statement. Additionally, the organization said on its website that the decision to downgrade COVID “does not mean the pandemic itself is over, but the global emergency it has caused is, for now”.
The hope is that the WHO will categorize COVID as similar to the H1N1 pandemic (swine flu), which began in June 2009 and was officially declared over by the health organization in August 2010, even as it continued to circulate.
Or, in other words, as the world continues to return to a sense of normalcy, the World Health Organization sees COVID as no longer the emergency it once was 3 years ago and that we are close to considering the coronavirus as similar to the flu.
