Seven years ago, John Allen Muhammad terrorized the Washington DC area with a 3 week killing spree that left 10 dead. Last night, at 9:11pm, Muhammad paid the ultimate price for his crimes when the state of Virginia executed him.
Muhammad and teenager Lee Boyd Malvo began the attacks with five shootings over a 12 hour period. The random targets had people all over the region fearful for their lives and changing habits so as to avoid becoming the next victim. But the killings were all a rouse, to mask the killing of Muhammad’s intended victim whom he never actually got to — his ex-wife. Muhammad believed if he could stage random killings in the area by a mysterious gunman, he could get away with murdering his ex-wife, Mildred, without suspicion and thereby gain custody of his three children. But his plan failed.
Attorney’s solicited Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine and even the U.S. Supreme Court to stay the execution, but were unsuccessful. Without showing one moment of remorse, Muhammad received a lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Center in Virginia, ending his life and giving peace of mind to the families of the victims left behind. Muhammad’s first wife and first-born son were with him on his final day of life and are escorting his body to Baton Rouge, LA for a private burial.
