The family of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds have planned a private service and burial today at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Burbank, California, where mother/daughter will be buried side by side. They are also planning a public memorial which will be staged as a grand Hollywood event, with Meryl Streep slated to deliver the keynote eulogy.
Meryl Streep was asked to lead the memorial due to her spot-on portrayal of Carrie in “Postcards from the Edge.” She also became very close to Debbie Reynolds after presenting her with a humanitarian award several years ago. The family has also reached out to several Star Wars alum, including Mark Hamill and creator George Lucas.
The public memorial is under the guidance of Billie Lourd, the daughter of Carrie Fisher, and will be a true Hollywood event. Reportedly, several costumes worn by Debbie in “Singin’ in the Rain” and other movies will be on display. Carrie’s “Star Wars” outfits will also be featured.
A special documentary on the lives of Debbie and Carrie was filmed back in 2014 and 2015. In light of their deaths, HBO has chosen to air the special this Saturday at 8pm.
In the documentary, Carrie says: “I’m my mom’s best friend. Far more than I ever would want to, I know what my mother feels and wants. There’s a lot of it.”
Her sentiments are hauntingly accurate. Upon learning of her daughter’s death, Debbie Reynolds said “I want to be with Carrie.” Not long after that statement, she suffered a massive stroke and received her wish.
