She stayed in a loveless and challenging marriage despite being unhappy for many years. But she did the noble thing on behalf of her husband’s political career and for the sake of her family. Now, Maria Shriver has simply had enough.
Over the weekend, Maria announced that after 25 years of marriage, she has filed for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger. Obviously the fact that he fathered a child with their longtime housekeeper was the straw that broke the camel’s back and just too much for her to handle.
In the divorce papers, Maria has asked for spousal support and wants the judge to deny Arnold the right to ask for support for himself, although it’s unlikely he would. She has also asked for joint custody of their minor children and for Arnold to pay the attorneys’ fees of both parties.
Arnold and Maria do not have a prenup, so according to the laws of the state of California, all property accumulated during the marriage will be divided 50/50. Maria has reportedly told friends she hopes for an easy and amicable divorce.
