The Democratic National Convention DNC 2020 begins tonight with a central theme of UNITY!

Politics
Originally planned as a raucous celebration of traditional revelry with thousands of delegates descending on the Fiserv Forum in the heart of Wisconsin, DNC 2020 has since been moved to Milwaukee’s Wisconsin Center and will be a first-of-its-kind virtual event designed to protect Democrats from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Although several events will still take place in Milwaukee, the creation of the 2020 Democratic platform, the speeches and musical performances, as well as the official nomination of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the party’s 2020 ticket will all happen remotely.

Daytime events during the week will mainly consist of various caucus meetings and the conducting of DNC official business. However, here are the main highlights of what to expect for the week:
.

Interspersed throughout each evening will be performances by John Legend, Billie Eilish, Jennifer Hudson, The Chicks, and many others. Additionally, Democrats have reached out to well-known military veterans and Republicans known for their national security expertise to discuss why Joe Biden will provide more stability and leadership than Donald Trump in the area of foreign policy.

Other participants you can expect to see throughout the week include Danica Roem, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates who is a transgender woman, grocery store workers and first responders who have been on the front lines of the pandemic, young activists devoted to climate change, as well as ordinary Americans who voted for Donald Trump in 2016 but now gravely regret their decision.

DNC 2020 will run August 17-20th, while the Republican National Convention will take place August 24-27th. The RNC is still scrambling to piece together a virtual convention after originally planning then canceling full-out shindigs in Charlotte, NC and Jacksonville, FL.

Not sure how much of it I’ll actually watch between tonight and Thursday (the finale). I usually don’t watch a lot of the convention…I usually catch the highlights.

Will be interested in seeing what the ratings are for this virtual event.

(sidenote) Regular readers may recall, I thought the Repubs would’ve been smart to nominate Kasich in 2016. I felt then that he was the best of the Repub lot and had crossover appeal. I still feel he’s the best of the Repub lot but I don’t have any respect for him anymore. Trump has darn near brought Our country to its knees, in every way imaginable. Some damage is irreparable. People have suffered and died needlessly under that creature’s soc-called “leadership.” And more people will suffer and die needlessly. The voices of men like Kasich – good men, competent men, patriot men – could have made a world of difference. But Kasich Failed in his patriotic duty. He chose to sit on the sidelines mostly quiet since Trump was elected…and waited to see which way the wind was blowing BEFORE deciding (just recently) to really speak out against the Republic… Read more »

“The non-conventions of 2020 may mark the final dissolution of the anachronistic political burlesque shows, and the conventional wisdom will be that its about damn time. Which is too bad, because they used to be something.”  – *Charlie Sykes – conservative Anti-Trump, editor-in-chief of the website The Bulwark

Yeah (as my mate would say)…a long long…long long time ago.

AP: Downtown Milwaukee restaurant owner Omar Shaikh envisioned overflowing crowds, packed dining rooms and a big payday when the Democratic National Convention came to town. Shaikh, chairman of the VISIT Milwaukee board, also saw the international attention hosting a convention would bring as a chance for the city along the shores of Lake Michigan to show the world how it’s evolved from a Rust Belt manufacturing hub to a thriving, diverse, modern community. “It would have been a game-changer,” he said. “There would have been people everywhere ready to spend, hundreds of millions of dollars coming into our city.” Now, with the convention that begins Monday nearly entirely online due to the coronavirus, Shaikh and Wisconsin Democrats, who a year ago triumphantly hoisted glasses of Milwaukee’s finest after winning the competition to host the convention, are crying in their beer. “It is a gut punch,” Shaikh said. “It’s almost like you… Read more »
