DNC 2024 Day 2: The Royalty Of The Obama’s
DNC 2024 Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention was another star-studded night filled with joy and excitement that flowed freely throughout the United Center in Chicago.
Politics :
This 2nd night of the Democratic celebration was hosted by the co-host of ABC’s The View (who happens to be a Republican), Ana Navarro.
Legendary singer Patti LaBelle led the evening’s festivities by firing up the stadium with her song “You Are My Friend.” Additionally, rapper and actor Common (a Chicago native) was joined by gospel artist Jonathan McReynolds for a musical performance created specifically for the DNC.
The main order of business for DNC 2024 Day 2 was a ceremonial roll call of the states and their delegates. DJ Cassidy led the call with individual introductory music for each state that had people inside the arena and at home dancing along to what has traditionally been a monotonous moment.
The party was so on fire that rapper Lil Jon made a surprise appearance and performance just to announce that the State of Georgia was pledging all of its delegates to Vice-President Harris.
At the end of the roll call, cameras cut to a live rally in Milwaukee, WI where Kamala and Tim Walz were just taking the stage to speak to a sea of supporters. Ironically, they were in the same arena that hosted last month’s GOP convention.
Jason Carter, the grandson of President Jimmy Carter delivered remarks on behalf of his ailing grandfather, who is only months away from his 100th birthday.
Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of President John F. Kennedy and the son of Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg also spoke on behalf of the Kennedy clan.
Each of the men showed they have a future in the party.
A video of former Trump voters and remarks from in-person former Trumpies, including Mayor John Giles of Mesa, AZ, preceded remarks from former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham.
Grisham provided first-hand knowledge about Trump’s dour style, then showed the audience a text she sent Melania Trump on the day of the Capitol Hill insurrection. She asked Mrs. Trump if she wanted her to send out a tweet denouncing the violence that day. Mrs. Trump responded, “No!” which prompted Grisham to submit her resignation.
Other speakers included Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
Doug Emhoff, the husband of Kamala Harris, provided delightful personal stories and anecdotes about his wife. He appeared nervous and a bit out of place at first, but eventually eased into the role that could make him the ‘first’ First Gentleman of the United States
However, the hands-down stars of the night were Barack and Michelle Obama.
Michelle spoke first, in what was a veritable master class in public speaking. Interestingly and unlike in previous years, she called Donald Trump out by name while still keeping it classy.
“For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us,” she said of the years Trump questioned President Obama’s citizenship and attacked their family.
“See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black. I want to know — I want to know — who’s going to tell him, who’s going to tell him, that the job he is currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs?'”
The crowd went wild.
Concluding her remarks, Michelle stayed on stage and introduced her husband, Barack, to a sea of cheering Democrats.
However, the 44th president of the United States didn’t pull any punches, either.
“Donald Trump has not stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator 9 years ago,” Mr. Obama said.
He then reminded America that Trump’s bag of old political tricks — including spreading an “us versus them” mentality — “has gotten pretty stale.”
“We don’t need 4 more years of bluster and chaos,” the former president added. “We’ve seen that movie, and we know that the sequel’s usually worse.”
Again, the crowd went wild.
The appearance of the Obamas on Tuesday night (who are true Democratic royalty), Hillary Clinton on Monday night, and Bill Clinton on Wednesday night proved a stark contrast between the GOP and Democratic conventions. Donald Trump has so many enemies, that the only living former GOP president (George W. Bush) or other Republicans from days gone by wouldn’t dare appear with or in support of Trump.
All in all, DNC 2024 Day 2 was a huge success. It fixed some of the time issues from Monday night and displayed a unified and fired-up Democratic Party eager to elect Kamala Harris for president.
