After Russian President Vladimir Putin cheated his way to another election win last week, US national security officials and White House advisors gave Donald Trump one very simple set of instructions: DO NOT CONGRATULATE him. So, what did Trump do? He congratulated him!

Multiple news agencies have provided video proof of Putin operatives in Russia illegally stuffing ballot boxes in his favor, in order to affect the eventual outcome. The election was very clearly rigged and the pretense of a fair and democratic process was a sham. Vladimir Putin cheated his way back into another round of presidential power. Any imbecile knows you simply do not congratulate that. Well, any imbecile except Donald Trump.
Trump’s well wishes to Putin drew enormous criticism from politicians on both sides of the aisle. However, no one crystalized the stupidity of the remarks more succinctly than Arizona GOP Sen. John McCain, a noted Russia hawk, who said: “An American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections.”
His words couldn’t have been more powerful.
So, why did Donald Trump ignore the very clear DO NOT CONGRATULATE admonition from his own national security and foreign policy team? Or, better yet, why has Donald Trump demonized Special Counsel Robert Mueller for his investigation to uphold democracy, but congratulated Vladimir Putin for his very clear sham of an election that obstructed democracy??
The answer is unclear, however, what is clear is that Donald Trump simply refuses to ever publicly criticize Vladimir Putin — and he doesn’t care what his own foreign policy team, Republican congressional members, or US allies think of it.

When asked why Trump would congratulate someone who very clearly cheated his way into the winner’s circle, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders offered this weak explanation:
“We don’t get to dictate how other countries operate. What we do know is that Putin has been elected in their country, and that’s not something that we can dictate to them how they operate. We can only focus on the freeness and the fairness of our elections.”
Yeah, right.
Donald Trump and his administration reluctantly admitted that Russia assaulted American democracy by hacking the 2016 presidential election in order to affect the outcome. However, Donald Trump has now congratulated Putin for assaulting Russian democracy by hacking their 2018 presidential election in order to affect the outcome.
