Skylar and Derek Martin hesitated just a little before embarking on their honeymoon to the Dominican Republic but decided not to be scared off by a rash of recent deaths and illnesses among American tourists there.
But they lost their bet with chance when, two days into their idyllic marital bonding experience, Skylar landed in the hospital, unable to stop vomiting. Her new husband got to experience the “for better or for worse” part of their vows.
“Initially before we went, we were a little hesitant,” Derek Martin told WWBT-TV in Virginia. “We thought it wouldn’t happen to us, and then for us to get there and it to happen on our honeymoon, or to anyone, it’s just sad.”
The two were staying at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, WWBT said, and had eaten at a hibachi grill at the resort on Saturday. Skylar ended up vomiting in the bathroom for six hours, then being sent to the hospital by resort medical personnel.
After being given intravenous fluids and being tested, she was diagnosed with a possible bacterial blood infection. They left early and flew home to Virginia on Monday, WWBT said.
“We just want people to know A) It can happen to you, B) It’s not being talked about, and C) It’s not safe,” Derek Martin told the news outlet. “It’s just not safe right now to go to the Dominican Republic, at any of the resorts, not just the Hard Rock Punta Cana, in our opinion.”

Oh DJ that is crazy!! I am very glad you made it out their alive. I have to agree with what you said, I think it is their booze that is making people sick and killing them. A dominican friend of mine was telling me they stretch liquor there all the time by mixing the good stuff with cheap. Then they sell it like it was real. I saw online the other day they are almost giving airline tickets away to go there because it is hurting tourism. I don’t care if it was all the way free you could not pay me to go there now. Glad you are ok DJ and thanks for sharing that.
