Election Denier Shoots Democrats In NM

We all knew an election denier would one day go too far and attempt murderous violence. Sadly, that day has come.

Solomon Peña was a Republican candidate for the New Mexico State House but lost his political bid to incumbent Democrat, Miguel P. Garcia, during the November 2022 election. However, instead of accepting defeat and the concept of democracy, Peña chose to follow in the footsteps of Donald Trump and other right-wing MAGAites and be an election denier.

According to The New York Times, Solomon Peña was “the mastermind” behind a conspiracy in which he paid 4 men to shoot at the homes of Democrats, including 2 county commissioners and 2 state legislators.

The trouble began only a few days after Peña lost the election. That’s when he took to Twitter to boast that he was following the example of his hero, Trump, by not conceding the race. He then hired 4 ex-cons to shoot Democrats in revenge for his embarrassing and unaccepted loss.

On December 4, 2022, a man fired 8 rounds of ammunition into the home of Bernalillo County Commissioner Adriann Barboa. On December 8th, shots were fired at the home of State Representative Javier Martinez. Only 3 days later, on December 11th, a shooting targeted the home of another Bernalillo County commissioner, Debbie O’Malley.

The election-denier violence didn’t end there.

Albuquerque police say Peña accompanied his hired hitmen to the house of Democratic State Senator Linda Lopez on January 3rd and “attempted to shoot,” but the automatic rifle he was using malfunctioned. Another man then shot more than a dozen rounds from a handgun, including into the bedroom of Ms. Lopez’s daughter.

“He had complaints about his election, felt it was rigged,” Albuquerque Police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos, Jr. said of Mr. Peña. “He approached all of these commissioners and the senator at their home with paperwork claiming there was fraud involved in those elections.”

Mr. Gallegos said the lawmakers were “puzzled and surprised” by his accusations, and that one confrontation led to “quite an argument.” The shootings occurred shortly thereafter.

“That kind of suggests why they were targeted,” he added.

Peña is now in custody for attempted murder.

Donald Trump launched the trend of claiming he won an election he clearly lost — all while providing no proof other than his own self-serving opinion that he had been cheated. GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake of Arizona also latched onto the election denier movement by refusing to accept her November 2022 loss and (without proof) also claimed fraud.

Now, we may add the name of Solomon Peña to the list for his violent refusal to accept defeat.
