EVANGELICALS BACK SANTORUM
In a raced effort to control the political process and assure a candidate with their moral beliefs wins the Republican nomination for president, evangelical leaders met over the weekend to pick their man.
As OK WASSUP! reported HERE recently, evangelical leaders are scared silly that Mitt Romney is about to wrap up the Republican nomination for president. Fears of Romney’s Mormon faith combined with his moderate approach to politics, is about to send some evangelicals into a conniption fit. A Romney win could marginalize evangelicals to the point of them losing their conservative influence altogether. So in an “Anybody But Romney” move, evangelicals have decided to collectively back — Rick Santorum!
Santorum is a Catholic, Christian family man, who has remained married to the same woman and believes in the Republican yackity-yack of protecting the family, no to a woman’s right to choose, no to gay marriage, etc. etc. etc. So for evangelicals, he is right out of central casting for their tastes.
“This latest endorsement reinvigorates our campaign,” Mr. Santorum wrote in a fund-raising appeal after learning that the religious leaders decided to coalesce around him in a last-ditch attempt to stop Mitt Romney from winning the Republican nomination.
On Monday morning, religious leaders converged on South Carolina and brought in dozens of out-of-state volunteers to help get out the vote for Santorum. Many joined conference calls with local church leaders to explain that they chose to support Mr. Santorum because they believed he could beat Mr. Romney in the primaries and President Obama in November. Because of that support and belief, church leaders have begun asking their parishioners to work at phone banks and send out e-mails.
“Once that switch is flipped, the conservative community activates like no other,” said senior Santorum adviser Hogan Gidley. Whether this evangelical strategy on behalf of Santorum is enough to stop the Romney train is still yet to be seen.
Talk about an exercise in futlity…smh. The truth is, many (if not most) southern White evangelicals view the Catholic faith in slightly better light than the Mormon faith, which many (if not most) southern White evangelicals view as NOT Christian at all. In fact, it's being reported this morning on MSNBC that Rick Perry, of late, has taken to making a NOT so subtle point of REMINDING voters in S.C. who attend his townhall speeches that Santorum is "CATHOLIC." There's a reason Perry is doing that. No shortage of Christianist BIGOTS in the Republican party! In short: No. In the grand scheme of things, this so-called "evangelical-backing" of Santorum will prove to make pretty much NO difference at all. He can't (and won't) defeat Romney.
