Expanded Supreme Court And The GOP
After their unexpected killing spree against democracy over the past 7 days, is it finally time for an expanded Supreme Court?
Politics :
Within the past week, the ultra-conservative US Supreme Court killed affirmative action, killed the Biden Student Loan forgiveness program, and gave the green light for businesses to use religion and “freedom of speech” to discriminate against gays and possibly others. Before that, the justices ended Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose.
Now, political operatives are warning that unless we move to create an expanded Supreme Court ASAP, we can kiss our rights and freedoms goodbye.
According to MSNBC contributor Elie Mystal, Democrats and liberals will be blocked from implementing any of their preferred policies as long as the Supreme Court’s conservative majority remains in place. He added that without an expanded Supreme Court, our rights and way of life will be stymied for the remainder of our lifetime.
“I don’t know what to tell you guys. We have to expand the Court. If we don’t expand the Court, no liberal policy will be allowed to exist for the rest of our lives. That’s why Republicans stole the court, that’s why rich people pay for justices. Govern yourselves accordingly,” Mystal tweeted.

Govern yourselves accordingly.
The Republican Party effectively stole the Supreme Court when it denied former President Obama his legal right to appoint a new justice during his 2nd term. The GOP also handed Donald Trump the opportunity to appoint 3 new justices, which were rapidly filled with judges who are brazenly playing politics and following the GOP/MAGA/evangelical Christian playbook.
The proposal is for President Biden to expand the Supreme Court from its current 9-member panel to a 13-member panel. The move would predictably balance the court and prevent it from operating as a wing of the Republican Party.
Meanwhile, as the court continues to mow down rights on behalf of women, ethnic minorities, and the LGBTQ community, at least one political analyst is predicting that the Republican Party will pay at the ballot box for the recent antics of the Supreme Court.
During an appearance on CNN, Democratic strategist Maria Cardona indicated that the student loan forgiveness decision alone will almost certainly motivate young Democratic voters to turn out in droves for the 2024 election cycle.
“… what I have heard from so many people across the board, young voters, Latino voters, Black voters, they’re saying that this is completely unfair, that this is something that is going to mobilize them in the upcoming election,” Cardona said during an appearance on CNN’s Primetime Live.
“And for Black and Latino families, that would have been a game changer, not just for their families, but for their generation,” Cardona continued.
“That’s the kind of thing that you look at this country and you say ‘this is the difference between me and my family and my kids being able to live the American dream, or having to essentially live paycheck by paycheck for generations.’
“And so it’s going to be a huge contrast going into the 2024 elections. I can already see the ads being written and I think it’s something that Democrats are definitely going to be underscoring.”
Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York agreed.
“The excesses of the Supreme Court is going to backfire. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade reduced what was supposed to be a red wave in the 2022 election cycle to nothing more than a red trickle,” Torres said.
“So not only is the Supreme Court’s decision, bad law, it’s also bad politics and it’s going to come back to haunt the Republican Party.”
Should President Biden recalibrate justice with an expanded Supreme Court? If yes, will he do it? Additionally, will the GOP be held accountable during the 2024 election for the high court’s recent transgressions?

Is it time for an expanded Supreme Court?
Great topic DJ and good post!
I will admit that this is a tough one for me. In recent years I’ve gone back and forth about it, in my mind. Would expanding the U.S. Supreme Court be a wise move or an incredibly bad move?
Honestly, I do not know(?)
I do hope that other readers will chime in and share their thoughts!
