FAST-FOOD “STAMPS”
Those are words that could soon be heard in restaurants from coast to coast, as several fast food restaurant chains are soliciting food stamp recipients to be eligible to use their benefits at select restaurants. Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC, Subway and others say that since many food stamp recipients are homeless or live in conditions that do not allow them to prepare hot meals, they would benefit greatly from being allowed to use their benefits at fast food restaurants.
Most states do not allow food stamp benefits (EBT) to be used toward the purchase of already prepared foods, although that is rapidly changing. Arizona and Michigan currently allow EBT to be used in fast food restaurants, while Fresno, CA is currently considering legislation to permit “fast food stamps” in their area. Some other parts of California already allow the practice and Kentucky is also considering it.
