FBI Director
James Comey Fired
By Donald Trump

Apparently, the heat was getting a little too hot for Donald Trump. How else can he explain his decision to fire FBI Director James Comey in the middle of an investigation of Trump’s ties to Russia and his possible collusion with a foreign entity?

Top News Today
As the old saying goes, “There’s something rotten in the State of Denmark.” Or, to put it more bluntly, “The shit has hit the fan.” On Tuesday, Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in a move that has rocked the political world and sent the Republican Party into a frenzy.

FBI

In a letter sent on Tuesday to the now former FBI director, Trump informed Comey of his surprise dismissal:

“While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigations…I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.”

Ironically, Comey was speaking to FBI agents in Los Angeles when the Trump letter was hand-delivered to his Washington office. Comey only learned of his dismissal when he happened to look at a television during his speech and saw the news on the screen.

The firing of Comey comes only a week after he delivered dramatic testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. His firing also paints the perception that he was getting dangerously close to finding the truth. Coincidence? Don’t bet on it!

The official reason given for Comey’s dismissal is beyond laughable. The White House stated that Donald Trump didn’t like how the FBI director handled the Hillary Clinton email situation last summer, so he fired him. Make note: the key phrase here is LAST SUMMER.

IF Donald Trump were actually concerned with how the FBI handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation from nearly a year ago, he could have fired Comey on inauguration day, but he didn’t. In fact, Trump actually congratulated Comey on his work with the Clinton investigation (which helped him get elected). So, why is that same work now worthy of immediate dismissal? It doesn’t take much to figure out someone is lying.

In an official statement from the White House, press secretary Sean Spicer explained the Comey firing like this:

“Today, President Donald J. Trump informed FBI Director James Comey that he has been terminated and removed from office. President Trump acted based on the clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The FBI is one of our Nations most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement.”

Top congressional Republicans with experience and resumes longer than a few years on a reality TV show, broke rank and spoke out against the horrific optics of the Comey firing and the long-term damage it could cause the GOP.

Sen. John McCain

“I am troubled by the timing and reasoning of Director Comey’s termination,” Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican, said in a statement.

Arizona Sen. John McCain said he was “disappointed” by the incident. Sen. Bob Corker, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and occasionally advised the Trump campaign last year, said he also had concerns.

“Regardless of how you think Director Comey handled the unprecedented complexities of the 2016 election cycle, the timing of this firing is very troubling,” said Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska in a statement.

Rep. Justin Amash, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, tweeted that he intends to introduce legislation supporting the creation of an independent commission to investigate Russia’s interference in the election.

Rep. Justin Amash

Thankfully, Rep. Amash has the right idea.  The time has come to put party affiliations and partisanship aside for the sake of the country.  A foreign adversary has been charged with interfering in a US election and the current administration seems to be mangling and politicizing that investigation for their own benefit and/or protection.  At this point, a completely independent commission is urgent!

For Trump to fire the FBI director while he is currently involved in an active investigation of the entire Trump campaign is absolutely unconscionable. However, his terrible temper-tantrum has political historians reminiscing about October 20, 1973, in what has come to be known as the Saturday Night Massacre, when then-President Richard Nixon fired special prosecutor Archibald Cox, who was investigating him. That single move led to the eventual impeachment of Nixon.

Could the firing of James Comey be the domino that begins the fall and eventual impeachment of Donald Trump?

.

Historians may one day remember May 9, 2017 as a fateful day in American history. In firing FBI director James Comey, the 45th President of the United States may well have set in motion a series of events that could lead to more controversy and potentially even his impeachment less than a year after being sworn into office.

Re: Nixon, Watergate and the Saturday Night Massacre. Kudos for including that bit of history in your post DJ. I was hoping you would do just that. So the question is: Could the firing of James Comey be the domino that begins the fall and eventual impeachment of Donald Trump? […] Lord knows I wish I could say Yes. Because if THIS isn't that watershed moment then We have, IMO, truly began a rapid decent into an authoritarian and more corrupt system of government. I pray that that is NOT the case. But we're in deep doo-doo folks. Let's not kid ourselves. The incalculable threat that fool and his minions poses to Our country is real. WE have a Constitutional Crisis on our hands. And the entire world is watching Us to see how We handle it. Our credibility. Our democracy. Our very way of life is on the line.… Read more »

Mr. BD

Hey Truth this time is serious business because Trump has the potential to pull the whole Repub party down with him. That is why all these Repub senators are coming out publicly against him now and a whole lot more have disappeared and are saying nothing. If they don't appoint a special prosecutor now then the whole party is in collusion and they will pay for it in the mid terms. They are not stupid and they see the writing on the wall.

…on a related note………

Sean Spicer to reporters in the White House briefing room yesterday.
The president has accepted the recommendation of the ATTORNEY GENERAL and the deputy attorney general regarding the dismissal of the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The firing is effective “immediately. […] – The Washington Post

The attorney general Spicer was referring to is the SAME attorney general – Jeff Sessions- who had to recuse himself "from the Justice Department’s investigation into Russian interference in last year’s election amid reports that he had met on multiple occasions with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. during the campaign even though he had testified during his Senate confirmation hearing that he had not interacted with Russian officials."

In whose world, pray tell, would this be considered "normal"…?

Trump's.

Mr. BD

I've been waiting for a break all day to come to Ok wassup because I knew this was going to be the story. Thanks as always DJ for all the facts. All of Trumps other antics could be covered up and explained around but this one is too serious. If Repubs protect him on this one like all the other times it is going to be political suicide. Trump is hiding something and now the whole world can see it. He wants anybody who can hold him accountable out the way and all his own people in charge to protect him. This isn't a dictatorship but he wants it to be. There are a few Repub senators like Lindsy Graham who is not playing politics and seem to want to do the right thing. Same thing with John McCain. It is going to take some guys like them to be… Read more »

BD I'm praying…really praying that Repubs and Dems will set aside their politics. This is waaay too serious for that foolishness right now. And we do not have time to waste on anyone (voters or politicians) who just don't give a d*mn about this country.

There is an extremely dangerous nutjob in the White House. He fired Comey because Comey (the FBI) is closing in on the Truth. He is perfectly willing to take down this nation (blow up our system of governing) to try to save his own sorry-azz.

But I sincerely hope you're right. – that THIS may truly be "the beginning of the end of Trump."

Melanie

Trump is in hot doo doo this time. I don't see how he wiggles out of this one.

Daniel Larison: If the hope was that firing Comey would reduce scrutiny on the administration, Trump and Sessions could not have miscalculated more. Many members of Congress, including some Republicans, are going to demand an independent investigation (and some have already called for that), and sooner or later they are going to have one. Trump’s larger problem here is that he has proven time after time that he can’t be trusted, so very few people outside his own party will be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt when he does something as suspicious and controversial as this. Because he has frittered away any credibility he may have had with countless lies and distortions, most people will assume his explanations for his actions are untrue and will assume something else must be going on. FROM CNN:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected Wednesday any calls for a new investigation by a special prosecutor into alleged ties between Russia and the Trump campaign in the wake of the President's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.

McConnell said "too much is at stake" to halt an investigation already in progress, though some in his own party appear to leave the door open to such a process.

FROM NY TIMES:
Days before he was fired, James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director, asked the Justice Department for a significant increase in money and personnel for the bureau’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the presidential election, according to three congressional officials who were briefed on his request.

Mr. Comey asked for the resources last week from Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who wrote the Justice Department’s memo that was used to justify the firing of Mr. Comey this week, the officials said.

Mr. Comey then briefed members of Congress on the meeting in recent days, telling them about his meeting with Mr. Rosenstein, who is the most senior law enforcement official supervising the Russia investigation. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from that inquiry because of his close ties to the Trump campaign and his undisclosed meetings with the Russian ambassador.

Yes. I'm on my lunch-break and I just heard them discussing this.

Apparently the investigation is…well was…really jumping into high gear. .

CNN: Federal Prosecutors Issue Grand Jury Subpoenas To Flynn Associates Federal prosecutors issued subpoenas to associates of President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn, CNN reported on Tuesday. Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, CNN reported that U.S. AttorneyDana Boente’s office is seeking business records from the period after Flynn was ousted as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014. The subpoenas represent the first sign of a significant escalation of activity in the FBI’s broader investigation begun last July into possible ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia. The subpoenas issued in recent weeks by the US Attorney’s Office in Alexandria, Virginia, were received by associates who worked with Flynn on contracts after he was forced out as director of the DefenseIntelligence Agency in 2014, according to the people familiar with the investigation. This stupid asshole is in so much deep trouble right now. No way around it he's gotta go.

TAC Reader:
It was abundantly clear that Comey acts to protect himself and the (perceived) reputation of the FBI, not Trump. When it was apparent that Comey wasn’t acting as an agent of Trump, Comey got fired.

I suspect Comey had enough savvy to figure that pressing on with the Russia investigation would protect Comey because {surely} no president would be so blatant as to fire the person investigating his administration. Similarly, Benigno Aquino probably figured no dictator would be so brazen as to assassinate a political opponent in broad daylight. […]

TAC Reader:
At this point the key question becomes what is Trump endeavoring to hide? NO ONE believes they fired Comey because he was too tough on Hillary! […]
