It was abundantly clear that Comey acts to protect himself and the (perceived) reputation of the FBI, not Trump. When it was apparent that Comey wasn’t acting as an agent of Trump, Comey got fired.

I suspect Comey had enough savvy to figure that pressing on with the Russia investigation would protect Comey because {surely} no president would be so blatant as to fire the person investigating his administration. Similarly, Benigno Aquino probably figured no dictator would be so brazen as to assassinate a political opponent in broad daylight. […]

At this point the key question becomes what is Trump endeavoring to hide? NO ONE believes they fired Comey because he was too tough on Hillary! […]

Yes. I'm on my lunch-break and I just heard them discussing this.

Apparently the investigation is…well was…really jumping into high gear. .

Federal prosecutors issued subpoenas to associates of President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn, CNN reported on Tuesday.

Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, CNN reported that U.S. AttorneyDana Boente’s office is seeking business records from the period after Flynn was ousted as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014.

The subpoenas represent the first sign of a significant escalation of activity in the FBI’s broader investigation begun last July into possible ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia.

The subpoenas issued in recent weeks by the US Attorney’s Office in Alexandria, Virginia, were received by associates who worked with Flynn on contracts after he was forced out as director of the DefenseIntelligence Agency in 2014, according to the people familiar with the investigation. […]

TPM Reader:
Yes, Comey's story is sucking up all of the air at MSNBC. Not one mention of this Flynn story which is also big news, on that network. Neither of these stories is good for Trump. If he intended to use the Comey story as a distraction, it seems to be backfiring, because it's dangerous in its own right. Moreover, this Flynn story will not stay hidden for very long. Perhaps the noose is tightening around Trump's bloated orange neck? I can only hope. […]

Days before he was fired, James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director, asked the Justice Department for a significant increase in money and personnel for the bureau’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the presidential election, according to three congressional officials who were briefed on his request.

Mr. Comey asked for the resources last week from Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who wrote the Justice Department’s memo that was used to justify the firing of Mr. Comey this week, the officials said.

Mr. Comey then briefed members of Congress on the meeting in recent days, telling them about his meeting with Mr. Rosenstein, who is the most senior law enforcement official supervising the Russia investigation. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from that inquiry because of his close ties to the Trump campaign and his undisclosed meetings with the Russian ambassador.
