FIRST GAY PRESIDENT?
Were you aware that America has its first gay president?
Well, if you weren’t aware, you’re not alone. Even President Obama himself wasn’t aware that he was gay. But according to the tantalizing new cover of Newsweek, he is.
Well, not exactly!
Newsweek celebrated President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage with a cover depicting an angelic image of the president with a rainbow-colored halo above his head. The image accompanies the issue’s cover story, written by Andrew Sullivan, titled “The First Gay President.”
In the story, Sullivan suggests that Mr. Obama’s announcement has been years in the making. He also points out just how much the president has in common with the gay community. “He had to discover his black identity and then reconcile it with his white family, just as gays discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile it with their heterosexual family,” Sullivan writes.
“Today Obama did more than make a logical step. He let go of fear,” Sullivan continued. “He is clearly prepared to let the political chips fall as they may. That’s why we elected him. That’s the change we believed in.”
Any regular reader of OK Wassup! knows that I'm a long-time reader of Andrew's blog. Simply put, even on the few ocassions when I don't agree with his take on an issue, I still love his writing. The truth is, I'm not crazy about the title of his Newsweek piece (I never liked Bill Clinton being referred to as the "First Black President" either). But I think Sullivan's article is great!
