President Biden delivered a dual message to world leaders at the G7 Summit 2021 this past weekend: this is no longer Donald Trump’s America, and America is back!
Politics
The G7 Summit 2021 is the annual meeting of the Gang of 7 large and wealthy world democracies and consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This year, world leaders met in Cornwall, England, where President Biden successfully seized a golden opportunity to present himself as the competent and compassionate new commander-in-chief of the US.
At previous world events, Donald Trump was a disastrous representative for America.
When Donald and Melania were invited to dinner at Buckingham Palace with the Queen of England, he showed up unannounced with Don Jr., Eric, Ivanka, and the entire Trump clan — a clear English faux pas. During a NATO summit, he was seen pushing a world leader out of the way so he could be seen front and center. At another summit, several world leaders were caught on an open mic mocking Trump for his braggadocious ego.

During his 4-year tenure, Trump made few (if any) friends among his global counterparts. He called Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel a “loser.” In 2018, he refused to sign a joint statement on shared economic goals with allies just moments after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released it (ruining 2 days of negotiations), and accused Mr. Trudeau of making “false statements”. Then, in an address to the United Nations General Assembly, Trump erroneously bragged that he had accomplished more than any other president in US history — which prompted laughs of disbelief from the assembled world representatives.
Although Trump often said the “world is laughing” at the US, time and again the world proved it was actually laughing at him.
“He [Trump] was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top. You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor.” – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
.
By contrast, Mr. Biden arrived in Europe last Wednesday with a completely different presentation and a bold 3-point agenda: to reassure allies that the hostility of the Trump years was an abnormal and momentary aberration in US policy, to coax them toward coordinated policies on Russia, China, climate change and the coronavirus, and to confront Vladimir Putin of Russia.
Not surprisingly (considering 4 long years of forced smiles with Donald Trump), world leaders welcomed President and Mrs. Biden to the G7 Summit 2021 with open arms.
French President Emmanuel Macron was filmed literally throwing his arm around Mr. Biden in a warm embrace. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson described President Biden as a “breath of fresh air” following their first meeting. All in all, it was a veritable lovefest.
Mr. Biden (whose decades in the US Senate and 8 years as vice-president were exceptional preparation for this very moment) appeared (unlike Trump) knowledgeable and well versed on world affairs. Among his global colleagues, he was firm yet compassionate. In meetings with Queen Elizabeth and members of the royal family, he was polite and entertaining — but clearly the leader of the free world.
First Lady Jill Biden was gracious and every bit the role of the presidential life partner. However, in a clear recognition that words matter and perception is everything, Mrs. Biden wore a jacket one evening emblazoned with the word “LOVE” on the back. It was seen as a subtle response to the time Melania Trump wore a jacket emblazoned with the phrase “I Really Don’t Care Do U” on the back.
Although Mr. Biden has been on the world stage and represented America more times than anyone can remember, this was his first time as President of the United States. From all accounts, his appearance at the G7 Summit 2021 was received with global applause and was an enormous success.

While I do genuinely appreciate the fact that, for now, WE (Americans) and the world have a president we can feel good about and trust to lead in a thoughtful and competent manner. The sad truth is, we’ll have to wait until the next presidential election to see if this really is no longer Trumps America.
And we’ll have to wait and see if America is really back.
