Gay Cookies? Conservatives Sexualize Oreo’s
Have you ever heard of ‘gay cookies?’ Apparently, a pair of traditional conservatives have — and they’ve gone so far as to declare that Oreo cookies are “gay” and they want no part of them.
Gay Rights
Right-wing talking heads Greg Kelly and Ben Shapiro are in the news after going public with their decision to boycott Oreo and its alleged “gay cookies.” The strange announcement came after the pair saw an Oreo ad in favor of an LGBTQ coming out story and now, they’re telling everyone to toss the chocolate cookies with the cream center into the trash.Â
The ad, entitled “The Note,” depicts a young Chinese-American man practicing a coming-out speech in front of a few close family members while he prepares to share his truth with his grandmother. As the young man shakes from fright at the thought of telling his grandmother that he’s gay, his mom slips him a note that reads: “She might be my mother, but you are my SON.”
The tear-jerking commercial ends with a message prompting viewers to pay it forward. “Coming out doesn’t happen just once,” it says. “Be a lifelong ally.”
Interestingly, “The Note” follows the 2020 short film “OREO Proud Parent.” Released in conjunction with PFLAG, the ad shows a woman bringing her girlfriend home to meet her family. Initially, the dad is frigid towards the same-sex couple but changes dramatically after he witnesses a neighbor looking at them disparagingly. The video ends with the dad coming to terms with his daughter and her partner. He shows his support by painting his white picket fence the colors of the rainbow.
Well, such homo-foolery was just too much for a gang of right-wing nut jobs to bear and they have launched an all-out war against Oreo, their ads, and their “gay cookies.”
“COOKIE!” Newsmax host Greg Kelly tweeted above a photo of Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster. “Why is the WOKE LEFT messing around with OREOS?!?! STOP THE INSANITY.”
COOKIE! I love COOKIES. C is for COOKIE. COOKIE IS FOR ME. I do NOT like GAY COOKIES. “Sexuality” has NOTHING TO DO with the Cookie experience. Cookies are for ALL! Basically Cookies are “asexual”—why is the WOKE LEFT messing around with OREOS?!?! STOP THE INSANITY pic.twitter.com/TS3k5M4LQv

Kelly then followed up his perceived sexualization of the Oreo with a tweet comparing the taste of the cookies to “driveway gravel.”
“Since @oreo is “coming out,” I’m going to remind everyone that OREOS SUCK. Taste like Driveway Gravel. Not MOIST,” Kelly tweeted. “Go with the FIG NEWTON. We don’t care about Mr. Fig’s orientation!”Â
Since @oreo is “coming out” I’m going to remind everyone that OREOS SUCK. Taste like Driveway Gravel. Not MOIST. Even Nabisco knows the truth–the cookies are too DRY. Milk Reliant, not a stand alone cookie. Go with the FIG NEWTON. We don’t care about Mr Fig’s orientation! pic.twitter.com/1FtiQscnbU

Next, conservative political pundit Ben Shapiro weighed in with an accompanying caption that read: “Your cookie must affirm your sexual lifestyle.”
Anti-abortion activist Lila Rose also chimed in and demanded that Oreo “stop sexualizing children.”
Sadly, these nutjobs actually believe that Oreo presenting itself as an LGBTQ ally somehow miraculously makes their product ‘gay cookies.’
“This is unhinged QAnon stuff, designed to give credence to the conspiracy theories of the growing right-wing cult that believes Democrats run a secret conspiracy of blood-drinking pedophiles,” Salon’s Amanda Marcotte recently wrote.
Her words were timely since this is not the first time conservatives have attacked products for being anti- (insert their conservative mindset/soapbox here).
Republicans have previously launched boycotts against Keurig coffee machines, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, and even Coca-Cola. Now, it’s (apparently) Oreo’s turn.
In short, we’ve gone from Florida’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” bill to the conservative movement’s “I do not like gay cookies” boycott.
Is it crazy season already?
