GET TO THE BACK OF THE LINE

Spread The Love

He was one of the most senior and longest serving Republicans in the Senate.  But now that Arlen Specter has joined the Democrats, yet continues to act like a Republican in Democratic clothing, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) has a very simple message for the defected Specter — GET TO THE BACK OF THE LINE!

`
On Tuesday night the Senate adopted a resolution making Arlen Specter the most junior Democrat on the committees he serves on. That even includes the Judiciary Committee, which he once chaired. When Specter left the Republican Party last week, he and Harry Reid said Dems would treat Specter as if he had always been a Democrat.  But that was then, and this is now!
`
Apparently, Democratic leaders are not very happy with their newest member and decided on a reversal only recently, after Specter took several high-profile stances contrary to his new party. Specter voted against the Democrats’ budget outline last week, he announced he would oppose Dawn Johnsen, the nominee for Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel, and, in an interview with The New York Times, he appeared to endorse Republican Norm Coleman over fellow Democrat Al Franken in the ongoing legal battle for Minnesota’s Senate seat.  Huh???
`
Specter was brutally honest when he announced his selfish reasons for becoming a Democrat were because he realized he could not win the upcoming election as a Republican.  Yes, honesty is the best policy.  But the new Democrat could have at least tried to play nice and at least appear to be a team player with his new party.  Since he did not, it seems he will now pay a huge price for his loose lips and continued GOP-style mentality.  And all this comes just in time to give Specter a lower profile during the upcoming confirmation hearing for Justice David Souter’s successor on the Supreme Court.
`
If it’s not already too late, perhaps someone should teach Specter the old adage:  “When in Rome, do as the Romans do!”

I agree with the Dems decision to put Specter “in check”. But this morning, there’s been an important update to the story.Politico:Dems Give Specter Judiciary Subcommittee Chair Laurie Kellman & Kimberly Hefling 5/7/09WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats gave party switcher Arlen Specter a plum Judiciary subcommittee chairmanship on Thursday as a potential primary challenger to the veteran Pennsylvania lawmaker stepped forward.Majority Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois said he would give up his chairmanship of the Crime and Drugs subcommittee in exchange for becoming chairman of a panel on human rights. The move, he said, would "best utilize Senator Specter's talents and experience in our caucus."The move came as Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Pa., a former Navy vice admiral, said he's seriously considering a challenge to Specter in next year's Pennsylvania primary."The Democratic political establishment reached into the GOP establishment to give us the Democratic candidate for the future. I don't think we… Read more »

The truth is, I have no problem with the Dems giving Specter a little something. After-all it would be foolish to believe that Specter didn’t have some sort of “understanding” with the Democratic “leadership” BEFORE he made the switch. But now he knows that talking “smack” and appearing to be a "DINO" ain’t politically smart_NOT if he wants a real chance at winning the PA Senate nomination in 2010. BTW: Speaking of Specter and the GOP:Politico 5/7/09:“GOP Relying On Specter-Like Recruits For 2010For many Republicans, including Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, the reaction to Sen. Arlen Specter's party switch was unequivocal: good riddance.Yet even as his jilted former party slams the door behind him, the GOP is quietly pursuing a 2010 strategy that relies heavily on candidates nearly identical to Specter. The party's road to winning back a Senate majority, it seems, is paved with moderates whose records are sure… Read more »
