Although the old saying states “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em,” Republicans are reportedly preparing to take it a step further with a new slogan: “If you can’t beat ’em, cheat ’em.” This, according to Mother Jones reporter Ari Berman, who is warning that the Republican Party is actively laying the groundwork for a GOP coup to steal the 2022 midterms and future elections through a combination of gerrymandering, voter suppression, and election subversion — all designed to create a permanent threat to voting rights in the United States.
In fact, Republicans are so convinced that the only way they can win future elections is to cheat their way to the top, they’re quietly seizing local and state positions that hold immense oversight over the election process.
“What’s really new here are these efforts to take over how votes are counted,” said Berman. “That is the ultimate voter suppression method, because if you’re not able to rig the election on the front end, you can throw out votes on that back end.”
This is why Republicans are so opposed to (and are mucking up) the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. They are preparing to dismantle democracy, deny the will of the American people, and switch to an authoritarian government controlled only by them and whomever they deem worthy.
Or, in other words, the concept of “majority rules” would cease to exist in American politics.
“Years of gerrymandering by both parties have produced a House in which there are few competitive seats and in which members are driven to extremes to avoid primary challenges by more radical foes,” CNN political analyst Stephen Collinson said. “While the Democratic Party’s radicalization tends to push it toward a more progressive democracy, the same process in the GOP has turned the party of Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln against democracy itself. That fact threatens to deny the country the healthy two-party system that has long been a hallmark of its superpower strength.”
