Warren Buffett is one of the richest, most successful and most respected men in the world. I mean, when this billionaire speaks, people listen. So why aren’t the Republicans?
Buffett took to a recent NY TIMES OpEd piece to say that the mega-rich in the U.S. are “coddled” by the tax code. He made the point that the country’s wealthiest citizens pay considerably less taxes than the poor and the middle class, despite the fact that it is the poor and the middle class who are hurting the most during this economic recession.
“My friends and I have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress,” Buffett wrote. “It’s time for our government to get serious about shared sacrifice.”
Buffett believes our debt problem and economic crisis could be easily solved by simply asking America’s super-wealthy to pay roughly $100,000. in additional taxes, which would be equivalent to asking the rest of us to pay maybe $10. additional dollars in taxes — a mere pittance. But Republicans aren’t having it and they are fighting like mama grizzly bears shielding their cubs, as they protect their extremely wealthy pals while questioning Buffett’s sincerity.

GOP Sen. John Cornyn of Texas tweeted: “For tax-raising advocates like Warren Buffett, I am sure Treasury would take a voluntary payment for deficit reduction.” And the anti-tax spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia tweeted: “If Warren Buffet wants to pay more taxes and send more of his money to Washington, why doesn’t he just do it?”
Why do Republicans vehemently call for solutions to decrease our national debt when it’s politically expedient for them, but turn a deaf ear to an actual plan by one of the world’s most successful billionaires when the plan doesn’t suit their rich cronies? Could it be possible that Republicans are playing political games?? Oh, say it ain’t so!
