GRAMMY’S PROMPT Zzzzzzz…
Despite being a member of the Recording Academy and a Grammy voter, I didn’t attend this year’s live event in Los Angeles. But while watching the festivities from home, I must admit I nodded off into snooze land during the telecast. And after reading a ton of Facebook posts, I wasn’t alone.
The red carpet celebrity arrivals prior to the show was perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the nearly 4 hour evening. With fans eagerly anticipating seeing their favorite star, or television networks devoting full broadcasts to what the stars were wearing, still it was showbiz, it was Hollywood, and it was entertainment. But as for the show itself? From my point of view, let’s just say thankfully I own a TiVo or I may have never been able to see it.
Unlike the Country Music Awards, which celebrates Country music, or the BET Awards, which celebrates R&B/Soul/Hip-Hop, the Grammy’s are a broad potpourri of all genres. But is it too broad? And does the fact that it covers everything lend itself to perhaps being a bit boring? For me, at least TiVo allowed me to skip past those performances and presentations that didn’t interest me. But for some others who had to consume the program live in its entirety, perhaps they weren’t so lucky. Interestingly and despite high ratings numbers for a show that has become an American institution, many viewers left feeling bored and only slightly entertained. But was that an anomaly, or are the Grammy’s badly in need of a revamping?
The truth is I stopped watching the Grammys years ago because, for me, it became THE awards show celebrating the largest pool of mostly "little-to-NO talent" people presenting the largest body of cookie-cutter *mainstream* DISPOSABLE music I've ever heard. It really is sad_smh. I will admit though: I was pleasantly suprised to hear that an artist with Real talent actually won the award for *Best New Artisit*…Esperanza Spalding…beating out the current pop flavor of the day, Justin Beiber.Btw: I don't watch the BET Music Awards for the same reason that I don't watch the Grammys. IMO, they reward too much crap.I think the mainstream music indusrty is today (and has been for quite some time) a sad state of affairs and I'm just thankful for the the internet and the *underground* music world. Whatever genre appeals to you, there is plenty of incredible music being created, and available, in the *underground.* They are Real artists making Real music! And I truly believe (and I'm certainly hoping) that someday in the not so… Read more »
