Gun Violence Bill Is A Victory For America!
Numerous shooting deaths across the country have turned words into action, as Americans have reason to celebrate a sweeping new bipartisan gun violence bill that has now become law.
Gun Control :
The murderous shooting spree of Black grocery store shoppers in Buffalo, NY as well as the heinous massacre of children at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX each helped prompt a new gun violence bill that was passed by the US Senate last Thursday, the US House on Friday, then immediately signed into law by President Biden.
Known as the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the gun violence bill passed 234-193 in the Senate (including 14 Republicans) and is seen as the most significant new federal legislation to address gun violence since the expired 10-year assault weapons ban of 1994.
The BSC Act includes $750 million to help states implement and run crisis intervention programs that (through court orders) will temporarily prevent individuals in crisis from accessing firearms. The legislation will also toughen background checks for young gun buyers, keep firearms from domestic violence offenders, and help states put into place red flag laws to make it easier for authorities to take weapons from people considered to be dangerous.
Regrettably, the new gun violence bill falls short of what Mr. Biden and the Democrats advocated for and polls show most Americans want to see implemented. Still, it was a step in the right direction in the continuing effort to end senseless gun violence in America.
After signing the gun violence bill into law, President Biden praised the progress in getting it done.
“Their message to us was to do something. Well today, we did,” the president said in reference to the families of shooting victims.
“Today, we say more than ‘enough.’ We say more than enough. This time, when it seems impossible to get anything done in Washington, we are doing something consequential,” he added.
“If we can reach compromise on guns, we ought to be able to reach a compromise on other critical issues, from veterans’ health care to cutting edge American innovation and so much more. I know there’s much more work to do, and I’m never going to give up, but this is a monumental day.,” Mr. Biden concluded.
Interestingly, the gun violence bill was signed 2 days after the Supreme Court struck down a New York law that restricted citizens to carry concealed weapons.
OK WASSUP! covers Current Events:
The new gun violence bill has been signed into law.
It is “a step in the right direction.” But a very tiny step. And judging by the amount of attention this bill DIDN’T from the news media AFTER being signed into law, tells you just how tiny it is.
Over the years, the Democratic leadership has presented as a smart but Very weak leadership. Gone are the days when Dems knew how to fight for what they want and what is right for the American people.
Forget compromise. Dems on Capitol Hill settle for whatever garbage the Repubs throw at them. And this country, Our country, is so much worse off today because of that weakness!
