Harder To Vote: The GOP Plan To Disenfranchise Voters

Spread The Love

Wake up, America. RIGHT NOW, Republicans are doing everything within their power to make it harder to vote.

Politics
Stacey Abrams was never supposed to win the governorship in Georgia (she was eventually robbed by former secretary of state and current governor Brian Kemp). Joe Biden was never supposed to win the presidency. A Black preacher and a Jewish man were never supposed to topple 2 incumbent conservatives and win both Senate seats in Georgia.

But, they did — and now, Republicans are hot as pistols and working overtime to make it harder to vote.

According to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, Republican state legislators have filed more than 100 bills designed to tighten election rules and make it harder to cast a ballot. They have all but accepted themselves as the Party of Trump and will push the narrative that the 2020 election was fraudulent and stolen until the day they die.

In order to make it harder to vote, Republicans are targeting absentee ballots and mail-in voting — which African-Americans used to their advantage from state to state during the global pandemic. They’re also planning to return to stringent ID schemes (traditionally used to block Black voters during the ’60s) by requiring 2 or more forms of identification before a vote will be accepted. Some states are even planning to require that a ballot be notarized before being mailed.  If adopted, the plan could significantly decrease the number of voters who opt not to cast a ballot in person.

The GOP proposals emphasize Donald Trump’s ongoing campaign to delegitimize the November election and future ones to follow.

“There’s going to be a rush in the next year to legislate certain types of election reforms,” said Nate Persily, a Stanford University law professor and co-director of the Stanford-MIT Healthy Elections Project. “The jury is still out on whether the lesson from this election will be that we need to make voting as convenient as possible, or whether there will be a serious retrenchment that makes voting less accessible.”

Still under the illusion that the 2020 election was stolen, Republicans are seeking revenge by attempting to alter the voting laws to their advantage.  They are targeting Arizona and Georgia (states Donald Trump and the GOP expected to win handily, but didn’t), as well as Pennsylvania, Michigan, and other electoral strongholds Republicans MUST seize in order to ever win another national election again.

DJ, thanks for this! Was hoping you would cover this topic and you did NOT disappoint.

I read about this a few days ago and immediately thought to myself, WE (Black and brown voters) had better “Wake Up” and understand just what we’re up against now. This is NO time to rest or become apathetic. I would posit that the Civil War Part II is upon Us. The fight is on.

WE cannot afford to lose. We MUST win this battle too!

I am late getting to this today but this is serious business. Repubs know they cannot win elections without cheating and that is what they are going to do. They want to bring back all those old voter games they used to do in the south and we need to pay attention.
