HAVE WE BEEN WRONG ABOUT CANCER?
Have we been wrong about cancer all along?
In 2000, The Hallmarks of Cancer study concluded that cancer is frequently caused when cells lose their ability to regulate growth, thereby creating cancer tumors. But at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research recently, scientists have discovered a variety of new theories that could be the true cause of cancer.
One theory is that microbes, which include tiny creatures like bacteria and make up 90% of the cells in our body, sometimes turn against us to cause cancer. Another is what scientists used to think of as “junk DNA” which makes up 98% of our DNA, is actually not junk at all but a mechanism for causing cancer, among other things.
These new theories are beginning to help scientists rethink their testing procedures, which could send them in an entirely new direction in their attempt to find a cure.
